Wetting behaviour of aluminium on BN, Si3N4 and Al2O3
Fig. 1. Wetting behaviour of aluminium on  BN, Si3N4 and Al2O3
Boron nitride shows a very good non-wetting behaviour against many metal melts such as aluminium and magnesium as well as lead and zinc. The graph on the left shows the wetting behaviour of aluminium on boron nitride compared with data for silicon nitride and alumina. To approx. 900°C a wetting angle of approx. 160° is observed. Between 900 and 1000°C the wetting angle drops clearly, however it is still situated above the values measured for silicon nitride and alumina. A detailed description of these circumstances is given in the technical paper Interceram 05/1993.
